Удивительная статья из Атлантика 1939 года: I Married a Jew.

Хорошая американская девушка с немецкими корнями вышла замуж за еврея, несмотря на протесты семьи и что из этого вышло. Маленький эпизод для затравки:

'But look at the matter from the political side,' I advise Ben. 'When a Swede or a Chinese settles down in a foreign land, such as the United States, the Swede makes haste to become a thorough American—at any rate he lets his children become thorough Americans; the Chinese, realizing that this is impossible, lives aloofly in Chinatown, minds his own business, and keeps out of American political affairs. The Jew, however, wants to have his cake and eat it, too. Like the Chinese, he clings to his own race, culture, and tradition; he trains his children to cling to these just as tenaciously. Then, like the Swede, he sets out to annex all the privileges of Americanism. He wants to rise to the top of the Gentile social structure, to wield power in Gentile politics of the community, state and nation. He wants to be left alone, but he also wants the country in which he lives to take good care of him. He wants to have full citizenship in that country, yet retain his citizenship in the Jewish nation.

Думаю что сейчас за эту публикацию уволили бы всю редакцию Атлантика, включая уборщиц, а некоторых редакторов бы просто расстреляли. Но в '39-м году Америка была совсем другой. Не знаю насколько изменилось американское общество с тех времён и в какую именно сторону поэтому воздержусь от коментариев.

Я не к тому что вот кто-то виноват, а к тому, что в современной Америке такая статья невозможна и открытые разговоры на такие темы тоже невозможны, увы.

Ну почему невозможна, вот мы же с вами разговариваем, и нас никто не убивает. Она, правда, невозможна в журнале Атлантик, но это выбор издательства и аудитории данного журнала. Трамп вот аж целую президентскую кампанию построил на том, чтобы к ним не принадлежать .

i think this lost relevance. jews DID finally melt. did precisely what the girl who wrote the article wanted.

while tehre was active antisemitism - melting pot was not a possibility, it would push them out. read roth, salinger :-)

but once antisemitism, while as pervasive as racism, is out of fashion - sure, jews.. disappeared. smartie Alan Dersh. warned of that pending in teh 80s.

Да, евреи в Америке ассимилировались и уже нет такого напряжения.
Но расовое напряжение, по-моему, только возросло. Вон недавно Старбакс извинялся вообще ни за что.

oh, compared to 50 years ago, 30, even 20 - it is palpably better...

the starbucks case i thought was bad, but the more recent u arizona case with two indian boys was a shame. the boys behaved POORLY - were late to a greoup tour nad refused to tell their names, plus they were wearing fairly disturbing slogans on black tees and generally did look hoodlumish, not like future freshman, so someone called campus police. ithought it's the boys' poor unbringing, really. the U turned over backwards though in a humiliating way. the state has many native americans, i suppose.
